What's on the BJC Health Science exam

The paper combines multiple choice and short-answer sections. Multiple choice questions test specific knowledge: the name of a body part, the category of a disease, the vitamin associated with a deficiency condition. Short-answer questions ask you to explain processes, interpret health data charts, or describe how to respond to a medical situation. Diagram questions are a significant part of the paper. You may be given an unlabelled diagram of the digestive system, the heart, or the lungs and asked to label key structures and describe their functions.

Health data interpretation is a skill students often underestimate. The exam may give you a bar chart showing obesity rates in Nassau versus a Family Island community, or a table showing the leading causes of death in the Bahamas, and ask you to draw conclusions. This requires you to read the data carefully and connect it to what you know about nutrition, lifestyle, and disease prevention. Students who have only memorised facts without practising data questions are often caught off guard.

Re-reading notes is particularly ineffective for Health Science because so much of the exam requires you to actively produce information: write the name of an organ, describe a process step by step, or interpret a graph. Passive reading gives you a feeling of recognition that does not translate to active production. Students who re-read often find they can identify correct answers on multiple choice but struggle on short-answer questions because they never practised retrieving information without prompts.

What works is active recall paired with diagram practice. Cover your notes and try to write out the steps of digestion, or the path blood takes through the heart. Get it wrong, check, correct, and try again. Is the first aid section tested in detail?

Yes, and it is one of the sections students most often underestimate. The exam expects you to know the correct sequence of steps for CPR (checking responsiveness, calling for help, beginning chest compressions at 100 to 120 per minute, rescue breaths), the Heimlich manoeuvre for choking, the recovery position for an unconscious person, and how to treat burns, bleeding, and fractures. Questions may give you a scenario (a person collapses at Cable Beach, a child is choking at a school canteen) and ask what you would do and in what order.
