The paper combines multiple choice and short-answer sections. Multiple choice questions test specific knowledge: the name of a body part, the category of a disease, the vitamin associated with a deficiency condition. Short-answer questions ask you to explain processes, interpret health data charts, or describe how to respond to a medical situation. Diagram questions are a significant part of the paper. You may be given an unlabelled diagram of the digestive system, the heart, or the lungs and asked to label key structures and describe their functions.
Health data interpretation is a skill students often underestimate. The exam may give you a bar chart showing obesity rates in Nassau versus a Family Island community, or a table showing the leading causes of death in the Bahamas, and ask you to draw conclusions. This requires you to read the data carefully and connect it to what you know about nutrition, lifestyle, and disease prevention. Students who have only memorised facts without practising data questions are often caught off guard.
The Bahamian context matters throughout. How to study — the parts students skip
Health Science students tend to read their notes and assume the content will come back to them in the exam. The problem is that diagram questions and data interpretation cannot be answered by recall alone. They require a specific kind of practice. Here is what to do instead:
- Draw and label diagrams from memory, repeatedly. Get a blank piece of paper and try to draw the digestive system, the heart, or the respiratory system without looking at your notes. Check what you missed, note it, and try again two days later. This is the only way to prepare for labelling questions. Reading a labelled diagram in your textbook and thinking "I know this" is not the same as being able to reproduce it under exam conditions.
- Use local health statistics as anchor points. The Bahamas has specific, well-documented health challenges: high rates of type 2 diabetes and hypertension linked to diet and lifestyle, a historically significant HIV/AIDS epidemic, and high rates of obesity. When you learn about non-communicable disease prevention or nutrition, anchor it to these real local facts. Answers that mention the Bahamian context are more specific and score better than generic responses about "people in tropical countries."
- Practise interpreting health data tables and charts. Ask a parent or friend to show you a simple table (even from a health article) and practise writing two or three sentences of analysis: what the data shows, what might explain it, and what action it suggests. This is a skill, not a fact to memorise, and the only way to develop it is by doing it repeatedly before the exam.
What helps and what doesn't
Re-reading notes is particularly ineffective for Health Science because so much of the exam requires you to actively produce information: write the name of an organ, describe a process step by step, or interpret a graph. Passive reading gives you a feeling of recognition that does not translate to active production. Students who re-read often find they can identify correct answers on multiple choice but struggle on short-answer questions because they never practised retrieving information without prompts.
What works is active recall paired with diagram practice. Cover your notes and try to write out the steps of digestion, or the path blood takes through the heart. Get it wrong, check, correct, and try again. Body systems are consistently tested every year, especially the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems. Diagram labelling of the heart is one of the most common question types. Nutrition and deficiency diseases appear regularly, as does HIV/AIDS prevention, which is given particular emphasis in the Bahamian context. Do I need to memorise all the bones and muscles for BJC Health Science?
You do not need to memorise every bone in the body, but you do need to know the major ones: the skull, spine (vertebral column), ribcage, pelvis, femur, tibia, and fibula, along with their functions (protection, support, movement, blood cell production). For muscles, know the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles, how muscles work in antagonistic pairs (biceps and triceps is the classic example), and the role of tendons and ligaments. A labelled diagram question on the skeleton or a specific joint is realistic, so practise drawing and labelling rather than just reading about these structures.
Is the first aid section tested in detail?
Yes, and it is one of the sections students most often underestimate. The exam expects you to know the correct sequence of steps for CPR (checking responsiveness, calling for help, beginning chest compressions at 100 to 120 per minute, rescue breaths), the Heimlich manoeuvre for choking, the recovery position for an unconscious person, and how to treat burns, bleeding, and fractures. Questions may give you a scenario (a person collapses at Cable Beach, a child is choking at a school canteen) and ask what you would do and in what order. Practise writing out first-aid sequences as step-by-step responses rather than hoping you will remember them under exam pressure.
