BGCSE Geography Study Guide

What's on the BGCSE Geography exam

The BGCSE Geography exam has two papers. Paper 1 is multiple choice, testing knowledge of geographic facts, definitions, and concepts across both physical and human geography. Paper 2 is the more demanding paper. It contains data response questions built around maps, graphs, photographs, and statistical tables, as well as essay questions asking students to explain and evaluate geographic processes and patterns. Data response questions make up a large proportion of Paper 2 marks, and many students underestimate how much skill they require.

How to study — the parts students skip

Geography is a subject where visual learning pays off. Drawing labelled diagrams of river processes, hurricane structure, coral reef cross-sections, and coastal erosion landforms is more effective than writing prose notes for these topics. The exam regularly asks students to label or annotate diagrams, and students who have drawn these repeatedly remember them better than students who only read about them. A sketchbook of geography diagrams, each labelled and annotated, is one of the most useful revision tools available.

For the essay questions in Paper 2, the structure that works is the same one that works in any exam essay: state your point, give evidence, explain the significance. A student who can correctly define a term, give one specific Caribbean or Bahamian example, and explain why it matters will score well. Climate change and its effects on the Bahamas is a topic where depth of knowledge really differentiates top candidates, so it is worth spending extra revision time on sea-level rise, coral bleaching, and the economic vulnerability of small island nations.
