BJC General Science Past Papers: Topics, Format, and How to Prepare
BJC General Science covers six strands across three years of school, and what makes it different from science courses in most other countries is the Bahamas-specific content woven throughout. The six strands of BJC General Science
The BJC General Science syllabus is built around six strands that run through all three grades (7, 8, and 9). Every past paper draws from all six:
- Living Things — cells, classification, organisms and their features
- Matter — states, atoms, elements, the Periodic Table, chemical reactions, acids and bases
- Energy and Forces — magnetism, energy types, forces, simple machines, sound, heat, light, electricity
- Ecology — feeding relationships, ecosystems, cycles (carbon, nitrogen, water), pollution, invasive species
- Human Body — nutrition, digestion, reproduction

The format of BJC General Science
BJC General Science is examined in two papers:

Paper 1 tests whether you know the content. Paper 2 tests whether you can apply it. A student who can identify photosynthesis on a multiple-choice question but cannot explain why a shaded plant produces less oxygen than a plant in direct sunlight will lose marks on Paper 2 that cannot be recovered from Paper 1 alone.
What you actually need to know for each strand
Strand 1: Living Things
The Living Things strand is where the Bahamas-specific content lives, and it is worth paying particular attention to because it is not covered in general science textbooks from other countries.
In Grade 7, Living Things covers:
- Cell structure: animal vs. plant cells, organelles (nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, vacuoles, mitochondria, chloroplasts), specialised cells (root hair, guard, palisade, blood, muscle), organisation as cells to tissues to organs to systems
- Classification: six kingdoms, seven groups of invertebrates, four classes of arthropods
- Queen Conch (Strombus gigas): external features (operculum, foot, mantle, claw, shell), gender differences, life history (spawning in spring/summer, veliger larvae, flared lip indicating maturity), habitat, predator-prey relationships, over-fishing and restricted legal size, economic importance
In Grade 8, Living Things covers:
- Linnaean classification: hierarchy (kingdom to species), binomial naming, dichotomous keys
- Nassau Grouper (Epinephelus striatus): five dark bands and tuning-fork pattern, measurements, life history, spawning aggregations and colour change (olive to black and white), high-relief coral reef habitat, climate change effects on reefs, closed season
- White Land Crab (Cardisoma guanhumi): external features, gender differences, life history (moulting, larval stages), rainy-season spawning, relationship between demand and catch rate, closed seasons
In Grade 9, Living Things covers:
- Plant classification: five phyla (algae, mosses, ferns, conifers, flowering plants), life cycle types (annuals, biennials, perennials), monocots vs. dicots
- Gum Elemi: native Bahamian tree, sandy-soil habitat, uses (anti-rash bush medicine, hardwood for buildings and furniture, hedge and shade)
- Maize: monocot angiosperm, grain structure (covering, endosperm, cotyledon, radicle, plumule), germination, wind pollination, products from all parts of the plant
- Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus): tubular body, four yellow tail spots, long antennae, no large claws, gender differences (extra claws in females), 6-12 months as plankton before metamorphosis, maturity at 3-5 years, coral reef and mangrove habitat, colour change (blue to red when cooked), closed season
Strand 2: Matter
The Matter strand builds from states of matter in Grade 7 to atomic structure in Grade 8 to chemical reactions and acidity in Grade 9. Key areas:
- States of matter: properties of solids, liquids, and gases; molecular arrangement; physical vs. chemical changes
- Atoms and the Periodic Table: subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons), electronic configuration, the first 20 elements plus iron, copper, zinc, lead, and others, groups and periods, metals vs. non-metals
- Mixtures and solutions: solute/solvent/solubility, separation methods (filtration, evaporation, distillation, chromatography)
- Compounds and chemical equations: elements vs. compounds, ionic and covalent bonding, word equations
- Acids and bases: pH scale (1-14), acids turn blue litmus red, bases turn red litmus blue, common household examples, neutralisation
Strand 3: Energy and Forces
This strand grows across the three years from basic energy and magnetism to light and electricity:
- Magnetism: poles, force fields, electromagnets, care of magnets
- Energy: kinetic vs. potential energy, energy transformation, renewable vs. non-renewable sources in The Bahamas (solar, wind)
- Forces: mass vs. weight, Newton's three laws, pressure, simple machines (six types, three lever classes)
- Sound: transmission through different media, speed (~330 m/s in air), pitch, loudness, ultrasound
- Heat: conduction, convection, radiation, conductors and insulators, thermometers, expansion
- Light: electromagnetic spectrum, reflection, refraction, types of mirrors, lenses (microscopes, telescopes, spectacles), dispersion
- Electricity: static vs. current electricity, series and parallel circuits, AC vs. DC, fuses, why The Bahamas cannot use hydroelectricity
Strand 4: Ecology
The Ecology strand has both standard biology content and strongly Bahamas-specific material:
- Feeding relationships: food chains, food webs, trophic levels, energy pyramids, producers and consumers, decomposers
- Water cycle: evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, effects of deforestation
- Carbon cycle: photosynthesis-respiration balance, global warming, greenhouse effect
- Nitrogen cycle: lightning to nitrites to nitrates, nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules (peas, beans, pigeon peas)
- Endangered Bahamian species: Hawksbill and Loggerhead turtles, Bahama hutia, West Indian Flamingo, West Indian Whistling Duck, iguanas, orchids
- Invasive species in The Bahamas: lionfish, feral hogs, Brazilian pepper, casuarina, Bermuda grass; how they spread and how to control them
- Solid waste: biodegradable vs. non-biodegradable, landfills, recycling, waste management for small island states
- Soil: classification by particle size, porosity, pH of Bahamian soil (slightly alkaline due to limestone), composting
Strand 5: Human Body
- Nutrition: six food groups, food tests (iodine for starch, ethanol for fat), deficiency diseases, balanced diet, BMI
- Digestive system: parts of the alimentary canal (mouth to anus), mechanical and chemical digestion, enzymes (amylase, protease, lipase), villi and absorption, peristalsis
- Reproductive system: male and female structure, puberty, fertilisation, twins, pregnancy, contraceptives, STIs
Strand 6: Technology
The Technology strand covers food preservation techniques (pasteurisation, freezing, salting, drying), communication technology history (lighthouse to worldwide web), and housing design in The Bahamas (building materials, ventilation, solar energy, water-saving plumbing).
What Paper 2 actually asks you to do
The structured questions on Paper 2 test whether you can apply content rather than just recall it. Common question types:
Explain why something happens
These questions describe a scenario and ask you to use your science knowledge to explain it. "A Nassau Grouper changes colour when it approaches a spawning site. Using your knowledge of the organism, explain this behaviour." You need to state the colour change (from olive to black and white), explain that this occurs at spawning aggregations, and link it to the reproductive behaviour described in the syllabus.
Data interpretation
A table or graph of experimental data followed by questions asking you to read values, identify trends, and draw conclusions. Students who have not practised reading scientific data find these questions harder than they should be.
Diagram labelling
Common diagrams include the digestive system, a plant cell vs. animal cell, the electromagnetic spectrum, and circuit diagrams. Know your labels before you sit the paper.
Design an experiment
State what you would change (independent variable), what you would measure (dependent variable), and what you would keep the same (controlled variables). Having this structure memorised makes these questions straightforward.
